Death At Sea 03:09
LYRICS: This is how the story starts way, way, away Death At Sea, a play with cast way, way, away The sun shines down on the precious ones The wind blows fair for the precious ones About to set sail A journey set for shores unknown way, way, away A poor, unnamed, unspoken place known as Sorrow Bay The sun goes down on the precious ones The wind turns around for the precious ones Who’ve just set sail, about to lose their way They’ve just set sail What a way to go castaway alone I’ll be your companion tomorrow A band of constant sorrow A band of constant sorrow The storm it tore the ship to shreds way, way, away The Captain, Crew are lost and Dead way, way, away The sun shines down on the lonely one The wind blows fair for the lucky one Who made it back today Home from Sorrow Bay He made it home today This is how it ends ‘til death us depart friends I’ll be your companion tomorrow A band of constant sorrow A band of constant sorrow

The Red Coats (free) 04:26
LYRICS: The Red Coats, the Blue Coats The Blood Reds and the Cut-Throats Took the field, in the snow To settle scores from long ago The end begins at the start With Raven Hair and Snowy White Two families’ favourite sons Perfect, smile, now young men they’ve become The end begins at the start With Raven Hair, comes a Raven Heart Ice will break before it bends To all they seemed the best of friends Jealousy like shadow grew In Raven’s coat of Midnight Blue As closest friend now closest foe Paraded a garment white as snow The best laid plans are played at night Raven Hair strode to Snowy White Whose back was turned, and from his coat He took his knife and he cut his throat People gathered where he fell And watched his White coat turn to Red His father rose as he died on the path Of melting snow from steaming blood He said, “So this day you will always remember We’ll meet here every bleak December We’ll bring our blades and wear Blood Red coats And take you down, you who are the Cut-Throats” The Red Coats, the Blue Coats The Blood Reds and the Cut-Throats Took the field, in the snow To settle scores from long ago

LYRICS: The voices were always her own They whispered to her through the ages They drove insane poor Nelly Jones But the truth was she made her own cages To keep her head clear, she courted the flame While her pale flesh would sear Well, there’d be only one voice to blame And the bird from the ashes has flown Away with the only true thing she had known “Take matters into your own hands And they’ll leave you alone” One name on the grave dug for poor Nelly Jones They said that she kept to herself But her head was a room full of strangers To drink and to sleep didn’t help But the truth was she made her own danger So tiny and red, lined up in row upon row In a box by her bed ‘Til the morning sky filled with their smoke And the bird from the ashes has flown Away with the only true thing she had known “Take matters into your own hands And they’ll leave you alone” One name on the grave dug for poor Nelly Jones She was never alone, never in silence It drove her to matches, drove her to violence The voices made Nelly her own private victim But she wouldn’t have told you Even if they’d let her keep living... Go on now, you know this is The way you always wanted it The fire and the phoenix The only thing to come from all the Painful scars of your own touch A single spark, never enough And the bird from the ashes has flown Away with the only true thing she had known “Take matters into your own hands And they’ll leave you alone” One name on the grave dug for poor Nelly Jones

The Old Captain (free) 04:30
LYRICS: Round robin, round We were all hypnotized by the sound Of his tales from the old country Told for a pint and a pound Stories of battles at sea From a voice that could shake down the trees And the face of an angel All battered by grand tragedy Raise your glass in the air With a tear in your eye Time has come now to bid him goodbye For at first light this morn The Old Captain has died Let him live on in legend tonight. No soul shared his name And he sought neither fortune nor fame But this old dusty tavern is kingdom O’er which he would reign Not a chapter of life he forgot And the truth of it all mattered not For adventure and grandeur and rapture We’d feast on the lot Raise your glass in the air With a tear in your eye Time has come now to bid him goodbye For at first light this morn The Old Captain has died Let him live on in legend tonight. The stars will shine brightly No more in the sky They’ve lost their best sailor to guide For at first light this morn The Old Captain has died Let him live on in legend tonight

Jack Davey 04:41
LYRICS: The cards spelled out maybe but not for Jack Davey His daughters & sons to the creek used to run His sons & his daughters drowned in muddy waters He knew in his heart… The damage was done The damage was done He knew in his heart that the choice had been made He took out a rag, a club & a spade It shone like a diamond in the mud at his feet Her face looked alive… But her heart didn’t beat Her heart didn’t beat Her face looked alive but her lips they were coal And onward the spade dug deeper the hole You ask me why, I’ll speak if I must “Ashes to Ashes & Dust to Dust… Dust to Dust” Ashes to Ashes, time fades away The hand we are dealt is the hand we must play Their lives were all over at just Twenty One The cards spelled out maybe… Maybe this one maybe this one maybe this one The cards spelled out maybe but not for Jack Davey His daughters & sons to the creek used to run His sons & his daughters drowned in muddy waters He knew in his heart that this was the one… This was the one This hand was the one This hand was the one he cards spelled out maybe but not for Jack Davey…

Recorded in Australia by famed Adelaide Producer Matt Hills, "The Red Coats" is Brillig's debut acoustic album.

It has been released throughout Europe, UK, Russia & North America in July 2009 by German label Black Rain, to coincide with Brillig's international festival debut and European CD Launch Tour. Back home in Australia, the LP was released during the 2010 Adelaide Fringe Festival, with further Australian/NZ CD launches throughout 2010.

Continuing in the same acoustic style as the Jack Davey EP, the new 12 track album also contains more up-tempo songs, sea shanties, a beautiful ghost story, a tribute to Brillig's favourite drink Absinthe, and of course the requisite folk murder ballads.
